What to expect during root canal treatment

Our dentists in Meridian, Idaho, understand that many patients might be hesitant to undergo a procedure they might need, such as root canal therapy. Patients often think of pain and discomfort when they hear about this treatment. Fortunately, our team at Ten Mile Smiles is here to take away the mystery of root canal treatment and discuss what you can expect at your upcoming appointments.

What can I expect during the root canal treatment at Ten Mile Smiles?

Let’s review the steps needed to complete root canal therapy, or “endodontic therapy,” at our office:

  • Evaluation. First, our dentist evaluates your smile to determine if you might benefit from root canal therapy.
  • Scheduling of treatment. Same-day root canal treatment may be provided in an emergency, or you may be able to schedule your appointment for later.
  • Preparation. Before the procedure begins, the dentist provides local anesthetics and, if needed, sedation to put you at ease.
  • Creation of an access point. Once numbed, the dentist creates a hole in the tooth which acts as the access point into the inside canals of the natural tooth.
  • Removal of the dental pulp. A mass of tissues inside the tooth called the dental pulp is removed. It includes the tooth’s blood supply and nerves.
  • Disinfection. Once the dental pulp has been removed from the tooth, the inner canals of the tooth are disinfected to eliminate the risk of infection.
  • Sealant. After the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, our team then seals the tooth with a material called gutta percha that prevents bacteria from entering the treated tooth.
  • Fabrication and placement of a dental crown. Because removing the dental pulp can leave a tooth weak and brittle, it is advised that most patients have a dental crown placed over the natural tooth structure to strengthen and protect it from damage.

Root Canal

Root canal therapy is a very common procedure. It has a reputation of being undesirable and painful. But when done properly it is actually painless. Every tooth in your mouth is composed of a crown and a root. When a cavity or bacteria penetrates the tooth, the root and its nerves become irritated. As a result, the bacteria within the pulp cavity needs to be removed and cleaned in order to restore the tooth to its healthy state. Following the procedure, the tooth is fragile and consequently is restored with the natural crown for a lifetime of durability. Root canals have a success rate of 95% or greater. Most root canal are diagnosed by patients’ sensitivities to a specific tooth. Be sure to consult your dentist any symptoms or discomfort occur.
